KAIKOURA
Kaikoura, situated on the rugged East Coast of New Zealand, where the majestic mountains reach the sea and ocean currents converge, provides stunning scenery and an abundance of eco-tourism activities involving a huge range of wildlife.
Kaikoura is one of New Zealand's leading nature tourism destinations. You can get up close to magnificent Sperm Whales (and maybe Humpback, Pilot and Blue Whales depending on the season), New Zealand Fur Seals and Dusky Dolphins on a Whale Watch tour, swim with the playful Dusky Dolphins and NZ Fur Seals, view the diverse birdlife including the mighty Albatross or take a Wilderness Walk through a diverse array of rare and endangered native species of flora and fauna.
But Kaikoura is not all about eco-tourism activities, the town still retains much of its historic charm with many cafes and restaurants in beautifully restored buildings. It is an important fishing port and seafood lovers have plenty of fresh local delicacies to choose from including the town's namesake Crayfish (Lobster), Groper, Cod, Mussels and Paua (Abalone).
Numerous artists inspired by the remarkable landscape and wildlife flock to the town incorporating local flavour into their designs and displaying their products in several galleries throughout Kaikoura.
